Under Oath!!!

Have you ever watched a courtroom scene where someone is called to testify? They walk up, raise their right hand, and are asked to swear or affirm that they will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Now, in my former days in law enforcement, I had moments where I had to testify. And when you are sworn in, that is not the time to freestyle, exaggerate, guess, or start adding a little extra seasoning to make the story sound better. No, sir. When you are sworn in, the expectation is simple: tell the truth. Not what sounds good. Not what is convenient. Not what makes you look better. Not what fits the mood of the room. The truth.

And that got me thinking about the Word of God.

In John 17:17 (NLT), Lord Jesus prayed, “Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.” That verse is powerful because Jesus does not say God’s Word contains some truth, suggests truth, or gives a few helpful opinions. He says, “your word...is truth.” That means the Bible is not just something we read when we need encouragement. It is the truth that shapes us, corrects us, teaches us, strengthens us, and helps us live in a way that honors the Heavenly Father. But here is where we have to be honest.

We live in a world where truth gets treated like it is flexible. People say things like, “That is your truth.” Or, “This is my truth.” Or, “I just feel like...” And feelings are real, but feelings are not always reliable. Feelings can change before lunch. One minute we are encouraged, the next minute we are irritated, and by the end of the day we are wondering if we need a nap, a snack, or both. That is why we need something stronger than feelings. We need the Word.

When I was testifying, my responsibility was not to tell what I wished had happened. It was not to tell what people wanted to hear. It was to tell the truth based on what I knew, saw, and had been given. As believers, we need that same seriousness about the Word of God. We cannot build our lives on opinions and only visit Scripture when we need a quote. We cannot let culture swear us in on one truth while Jesus is praying that we be made holy by another. If God’s Word is truth, then we need to stay in it. Not just read it occasionally. Stay in it. Let it examine us. Let it correct us. Let it comfort us. Let it renew how we think. Let it teach us what is right when the world keeps trying to redefine it. Because the Word does not just inform us. It forms us.

Jesus prayed, “Make them holy by your truth.” That means God uses His Word to set us apart. He uses His Word to shape our character, direct our steps, and help us become more like Him. And let me say this plainly: staying in the Word does not mean we will understand everything overnight. Sometimes we read and have to sit with it. Sometimes we read and say, “Lord, I need help with that one.” Sometimes the Word encourages us. Sometimes the Word corrects us. Sometimes the Word steps right on our toes and does not even apologize. But that is love. The Heavenly Father is not trying to confuse us. He is giving us truth so we do not have to be carried away by every emotion, every opinion, every trend, or every loud voice around us.

So today, maybe the reminder is simple. You have been sworn in. Not to testify in a courtroom. But to live as someone shaped by the truth of God’s Word. Stay in the Word. Stay close to the truth. Let Scripture have the final say. Because when life starts asking questions, when pressure starts talking, when temptation starts presenting evidence, and when culture starts making arguments, we need to know what the truth says. And according to Jesus, the Father’s Word is truth.

Reflect on an area of your life where you may have been guided more by feelings, opinions, or outside voices than by the Word of God. Consider how you can invite Lord Jesus to teach you through Scripture in that specific area. Ask Him to help you stay rooted in the truth, so your thoughts, words, choices, and actions are shaped by the Word of the Heavenly Father. When everything else starts speaking, let the Word testify.
