Steph Curry, one of the greatest NBA players, is renowned for his exceptional shooting skills. He holds the record for the most three-pointers made in NBA history. Throughout his 16-season career, Curry has made over 4200 three-pointers, and his tally continues to grow. Let’s delve into some calculations: Curry has played 16 seasons, averaging 62 games per season. His average three-pointers per game is an impressive 4.3. In comparison, the average three-pointers per game across the NBA is between 1 and 1.5. So, let’s assume an average of 1.25 three-pointers per game for the entire NBA. Remarkably, Curry makes three times as many three-pointers per game as all the NBA players combined. If you’ve ever witnessed Steph Curry in action, it’s evident that he possesses an extraordinary shooting ability, rarely missing a shot.
One day, my son and I visited the local recreation center to play some basketball. Before I delve into the story, I have a few caveats to share. I used to play basketball regularly, and this was a bonding moment with my son, Brandon. We started shooting around a bit, and then a guy approached us and asked, “Y’all wanna run?” We agreed. We began selecting teams, and then someone shouted, “Whole court!” In my mind, I thought, “Who’s about to play whole court?” As I mentioned earlier, this was a bonding time with my son, so here I go—a 39-year-old playing whole court. My first shot clanked, my second shot clanked, and my third shot didn’t make any sound; it simply landed out of bounds. My fourth shot produced an indescribable sound that made the guys on the other court turn and look towards us. The moral of the story is that I’m not Steph Curry. I miss!
As you may know, Steph is a skilled shooter, but he still misses sometimes. I, on the other hand, missed every shot I took at the recreation center. However, there’s one person who never misses: Lord Jesus! He was perfect and never missed a shot. He was the perfect sacrificial lamb of God who died for our sins. But Lord Jesus didn’t just die for our sins; He was also our greatest teacher. When HE taught, HE never missed a single lesson. Let’s take a look at some of the greatest teachings of Lord Jesus:
John 14:6 (NIV): "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
John 10:10 (NIV): "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
John 6:35 (NIV): "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."
Matthew 6:33 (NIV): "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
John 11:25-26 (NIV): "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die."
Has Lord Jesus missed yet? No, here’s some more:
Matthew 11:28 (NIV): "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
John 8:12 (NIV): "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Matthew 6:34 (NIV): "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
John 3:16 (NIV): "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Luke 6:31 (NIV): "Do to others as you would have them do to you."
I want to share this with you before I conclude. Steph Curry’s remarkable shooting skills weren’t the result of mere chance. His journey to becoming the greatest three-point shooter of all time was the result of unwavering discipline in his training and method. Similarly, we must emulate Steph’s discipline in receiving the teachings of Lord Jesus. We must be disciplined in reading, studying, and researching His teachings. By becoming disciples of Christ, we must first cultivate discipline in His teachings.
Next Step:
Reflect on a part of your life where you feel the need for assistance and guidance. Consider how you can invite Lord Jesus to be your teacher in that specific area.
God bless you, God keep you. God loves you and I love you too!
